ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper
and there are many ways to serve them (see tip).
The veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but
you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince.
This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging
around. The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a meal for an emergency.

SERVES 4

4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion

1 onion, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, chopped

400g tin chopped tomatoes

200g white bread (day old, if possible)

whole milk (enough to soak the bread)

500g beef mince

250g English veal mince

2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve

4 anchovies, finely chopped

2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

salt and freshly ground black pepper

350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)

1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive
oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped
onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to soften.
Add the tomatoes and when the liquid starts to bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave to
cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create
a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.

2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft.
In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and
the rest of the onions and garlic. Then add the
soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the
mixture into 12-14 meatballs.

3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over
a medium heat. When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all over.
If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside on a plate while you cook the remainder.

4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set
aside. Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a
medium heat. Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.

TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet
instructions until al dente. Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary,
and then transfer it back to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil and butter.

Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the meatballs and sauce.
Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.

quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.

But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near
empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of
a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud
soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale,
luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.

Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes
far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and
charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’,
we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped
savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently
saline, raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each,
is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth.
I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t.
Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

parts. But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked
Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly,
lasciviously rich. Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great
cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty. A mushroom soup is equally
splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding
with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.

There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange
sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side of bitter.
It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I
eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a
tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.

Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp,
with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District
is famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep
into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort of
pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve
an early start. But first, another bottle of wine.

Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days after a chaotic
election, set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred by technical problems.

Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls, billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s
Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from

Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems,
including issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.

In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the queues, it
said.

Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time,
giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.

In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to
reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo
who arrived at 4:30 am.

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able
to vote as he had exams the next day.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive
for its competitors in the short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for
more than two thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products
by 2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from
a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into
the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had
been expecting it from May 2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is
hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S. states ahead of
the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.

states from 2024, but a national launch would only come
after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from 2025, he continued.

“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching
in 10 states in the first year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.

“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies,
said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s
rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine
products was no longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come
from sales of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance
of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share,
and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there
in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive
amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed
attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge
– The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book
is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the
airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were
‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome,
London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and,
in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t
see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers
to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the
southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the
book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book
launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response
gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims
about him the Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public
figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances
that they create,’ he said.

Extravagant Qantas perk Anthony Albanese FAILED to declare

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist,
wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also
taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk
about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime
Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop
mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or
rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for
him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …
anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit
job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences
politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you
name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back
on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public
is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind
of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the
only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to
sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think
(the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted
and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those
types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for
Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist,
and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane,
it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front
of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

The film is likely to be a hot contender during
the upcoming awards season, having recived a 98-percent rating from both critics
and moviegoers on Rotten Tomatoes. 

It earned $13.45 million over the weekend. So far, the film has pulled in more than $83.7 million domestically and more than $64 million internationally for
a global take of $148.45 million.  

Landing in third place was Joaquin Phoenix and Lady
Gaga in Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box office competition during its debut weekend could not overcome the bad reviews,
enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.

The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four thousand theaters across the

As their race for the US presidency comes down to
the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite
theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak,
with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.

And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of
about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.

In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to
back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution —
and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.

To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”

She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse,
has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.

“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a

“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”

He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.

“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.

“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back
the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute
anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who work for
the federal government.

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez
said.

– Mixed impact –

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more
people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that
activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very
narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and
both appear likely to pass.

So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian,
a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and
to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes
“a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns
about “government interference,” she added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,”
said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s
recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to
maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

JAKARTA/LOS ANGELES, Nov 13 (Reuters) – Juul Labs Inc is exploring selling its compact vaping devices in Asia
and has sounded out government officials in Indonesia, one of the
world’s most smoker-friendly countries, although gaining approval there could face significant hurdles.

Expansion into Asia would provide the fast-growing firm with new markets
at a time when it faces increased regulatory scrutiny in the United States and Israel over the potential health risks of its products’ high nicotine content.

Juul representatives held discussions with the Indonesian government last month
about introducing its vaping devices, the country’s finance ministry officials told Reuters.

Indonesia has one of the world’s highest rates of smoking
among adults and teenage boys and imposes no penalties for selling cigarettes
to minors. It also has a population of 260
million, making it a highly attractive market for tobacco and vaping firms.

A person familiar with Juul’s plans said executives for
the San Francisco-based company are concerned authorities may be
reluctant to grant approval due to likely opposition from the traditional tobacco industry, which provides
much of Indonesia’s tax revenue.

Tobacco taxes accounted for nearly 150 trillion rupiah ($10.2
billion) or about 11 percent of national tax revenue in 2017,
government data showed. Each province also imposes taxes on cigarettes.

Juul is also worried its argument that vaping is healthier than smoking will not hold much sway in Indonesia, which is
not as concerned as other countries about health issues,
said the person, declining to be identified as the
discussions were not public.

Juul representatives reached out to the finance ministry to discuss how it would be taxed
on any sales of devices there, the Indonesian officials said.

The government needs to examine the domestic e-cigarette market to determine how a
foreign player such as Juul could hurt local small
and labour-intensive e-cigarette firms, said Sunaryo, a senior official in Indonesia’s customs and excise office, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.

“We will need it to study it,” he said, adding he wasn’t sure Juul would comply with a regulation that requires e-cigarette devices
and liquids to be sold separately.

Juul also would need approval from Indonesia’s Food and
Drug Agency. Officials at the agency said Juul had yet
to be in touch.

Other Asian countries the three-year old firm is
actively considering for expansion include India, South Korea and the Philippines, the person familiar with Juul’s
plans said.

In addition to Indonesia, Juul filed trademark applications for those countries
between April and October 2018, as well as in Malaysia and Singapore, according
to a Reuters review of government filings. It opened its first Asia office in Singapore in July.

So far Juul, currently valued at $16 billion, is available only in the United States, Canada, the UK
and Israel. It has plans to enter Russia later this year.

Juul said in a statement to Reuters it is “proactively learning more” and engaging with local officials in Asia “to understand and hear their views.” It does not have immediate
plans to launch in any Asian country, it said.
Juul spokeswoman Victoria Davis declined to elaborate.

A TAXING QUESTION

Indonesia is one of only a handful of United Nations member states that has not signed on to the World Health Organization’s global treaty that sets standards for tobacco control.

Roughly two-thirds of Indonesian men smoke tobacco daily,
and more than 21 percent of boys aged 13-15 smoked cigarettes regularly,
according to a WHO report last year.

E-cigarettes, available in Indonesia since at least 2013, are a small but
growing market. The customs office estimated there are about 300 unsupervised liquid makers known as brewers
in Indonesia, producing various liquid products to more
than 4,000 vape stores and 900,000 smokers.

Philip Morris International Inc, maker of Marlboro cigarettes,
which now controls about a third of Indonesia’s market through its stake in Sampoerna, does not
offer any of its non-combustible cigarette products in Indonesia.

That includes its IQOS device, a heat-not-burn tobacco product, according
to a company spokesman, who declined to comment on why
it has not introduced the product.

In October, the government imposed a 57 percent tax on electronic-cigarette liquids, on par with taxes on traditional cigarettes.
But tax collection, particularly from smaller companies, is difficult in Indonesia and new rules are often ignored.

Juul now commands nearly 75 percent of U.S. e-cigarette
market share, up from 13.6 percent in early 2017,
according to a Wells Fargo analysis of Nielsen retail data.

Its products, like most electronic cigarettes, vaporize a liquid containing nicotine.
One Juul pod contains as much nicotine as a traditional pack of 20 cigarettes, according to the company’s U.S.
marketing.

Juul liquid in the U.S. has a nicotine concentration of 59 milligrams per milliliter, much higher than the liquids typically sold in earlier versions
of e-cigarettes and nearly three times the allowable limit in the European Union.

In August, Israel banned Juul devices with nicotine concentration of more than 20 mg/mL,
citing “a grave risk to public health.” Juul is appealing that decision and currently offers
a lower nicotine-strength electronic cigarette in Israel.

In September, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration opened an investigation into Juul and other electronic cigarette companies, citing
the rising number of teens who appear to be using Juul
and other vaping devices. This week it is expected to issue a ban on fruit and
candy-flavoured e-cigarettes sold in convenience stores and gas stations.

In its statement to Reuters, Juul said its products are
intended for adult use only, and that it aims
to “improve the lives of the world’s one billion adult smokers” by providing an alternative to cigarettes.
